Our Challenge: Creating Opportunity for Unemployed Workers

Monday, August 27, 2012

Hello friends:

A few months ago, I was invited to participate in an Aug. 29 panel workshop on creating jobs and opportunity for the 20 million Americans who are currently unemployed.  The panel — which was held during the Republican National Convention —  was assembled with one goal in mind:  Why not use this opportunity to bring together people from many sectors and many walks of life — from venture capitalists to college presidents, from Republicans to Democrats — to talk about how we can help the millions of unemployed Americans and find blueprints that will work?

I’m honored to have served on this extraordinary panel discussion that tackled these pressing issues.

The discussion, titled “What is Working,” was moderated by former NBC anchor Tom Brokaw and the panelists included Gov. John Kasich of Ohio; Allen Blue, the CEO of LinkedIn; Scott Case, CEO of Startup America; Judith Rodin, president of the Rockefeller Foundation and former president of the University of Pennsylvania; and Marc Freedman, CEO of Encore.org, whose organization aims to help older Americans find a second (or “encore”) career.

I hope that you, as a friend and partner of Valencia College, will watch this discussion and provide me with feedback on how we can create strong partnerships to help our students, our community and our businesses. The video, which was livestreamed on NBC News video, is available below.
